CITIES by Efdot x Diid
Cities is an exploration how we view, experience, and recollect the vibrancy of the cities we visit and call home. Each city grid provides a new terrain through positive and negative space, for the viewer to explore.
Layers of color raise questions and play into our perception of scale, depth, and time. Connections and subtle overlaps reflect the infinite stories, actions and reactions that make up our world. How does time seem to move faster in digital space, as in big cities like NYC?
INSPIRATION
Cities draws upon various points of inspiration: From street-art murals and paint marker linework, to minimalism and geometric modernism.
Motion is elegantly captured through longer lines of light — these invoke visuals in the viewer’s mind akin to long-exposure urban photography.
This project utilizes the Bauhaus principle of gestalt. Cities balances abstract lines with semi-figurative elements, evoking an “aha” moment as viewers connect the dots in their mind — even inserting themselves into each work, like the “YOU ARE HERE” markers we’ve all encountered so many times.
Efdot’s lifelong connection to New York led him to start drawing these abstract cityscapes by hand, later joining forces with Diid to make this collection represent an “infinite city.”
Glyphs
Hidden within the city grid, are traces of Efdot’s iconic visual language. The Glyphs find their way onto intersections, dragging diagonally across the avenues – evoking a sense of action along with narrative mystery.
Accordingly, the color palettes are all drawn both from Efdot’s travels, his painted work and from photos he has captured across the world.
