Summer of Sketching Launches in 2 Weeks!
Have you ever tried to build a new habit or activity into your routine, only to find out that it got in the way of something else you loved?
This is exactly how I felt back in 2013 when I started practicing lettering every day. I was spending hours upon hours, sitting at my poorly lit drawing table in the corner of my apartment.
I wanted to take the weekends off to go out to enjoy the weather, but that was the valuable time that I was using to improve my craft. Summer rolled around and I realized I wasn't living my life to it's fullest. Something needed to change.
A simple idea: go outside and sketch.
Summer of Sketching started as a challenge to get outside and draw. I would go to a new place each weekend, using my surroundings as inspiration, and post the drawings I made to Instagram using #summerofsketching. I encouraged my friends to join in and do the same thing.
By the end of the summer I had a stack of tight sketches that I was able to refine/vectorize later that year and add to my portfolio. And I had a ton of fun in the process!
How You Can Participate
On June 15th, the project kicks off for its 3rd year, and it's going to be the best one yet. If you'd like to join in, just post your original drawings on Instagram with #summerofsketching. (Even better if you can spread the word and do it with a friend.)
I've got some new things up my sleeve, including a couple beautiful products to make your process even more enjoyable. These will be available for purchase at the launch, and all of the proceeds go directly back into the project.
Enter for a chance to win free sketching gear.
Did I mention there's gonna be a giveaway like last year's? The more drawings you post, the better chances you have to win. The rest of the details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Meetups and Collaborations
If you're not already excited, here's a video clip of a recent sketching collaboration I did in Los Angeles with Drew Melton, Adam Gonzales, Daniel Palacios and my older brother Josh. And yes, there will be more things like this soon. Enjoy!
